The City of Ball Ground is located just north of Canton, Georgia and south of Nelson, Georgia. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of it land. The city’s elevation averages around 1,100 feet above sea level, ranging from just over 1,000 feet in the valleys to around 1,200 feet (370 m) on several hilltops within the city.
Although its name has always been applied to the immediate locality, it did not come into existence as a town until the railroad passed through it in 1882. Its development up to that year consisted mainly of two country stores and half a dozen dwellings. The community was almost purely agricultural. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 1,433. Ball Ground is at the northernmost end of Georgia Interstate 575, north of Canton.
